Why does my iPhone show “No service”?
The carrier settings update may have failed, or your iPhone may have a hardware problem. It’s also possible that carriers are facing operational issues due to the lack of network access on their iPhones.
There are quite a few fixes to get rid of the iPhone “out of service” error message. Let’s look at each.
10 ways to fix iPhone when there is no service
- Check coverage area
- Switch airplane mode on / off
- Restart your iPhone
- Reinsert the SIM card
- Enable data roaming
- Reset network settings
- Make sure the date and time are set correctly
- Update carrier settings
- Update iPhone
- Contact your service provider
1. Check the coverage area
If you live in a rural area, you probably don’t have one of the best cell phone receivers. In that case, talk to your service provider and persuade them to install a cellular tower in your area or get a signal booster at home.
Alternatively, if you have a reliable Wi-Fi connection at home, you can try enabling Wi-Fi calling.
2. Turn airplane mode on / off
First, make sure airplane mode isn’t turned on. Then turn airplane mode on and then back off.
To do this, go to Setting → Switch on Airplane mode → Switch off after a few seconds.

This should fix the no-service error, but if you still get the error message, you can check the following fix:
3. Restart your iPhone
Restarting your iPhone may help you get rid of the error. So don’t hesitate to give a chance.
- For iPhone X and later: Press and hold either the volume button or the side button until you see the power off slider. Then swipe the power off slider to shut down the device. Now wait a minute or two, then press and hold the side button again to turn it back on.
- For iPhone 8 and earlier: Hold down the side button and drag the power off slider to power off the device. After a while, press and hold the side button to turn it on.
4. Reinsert the SIM card
Sometimes the problem is not that big. This may be true for your iPhone. The SIM card may not be inserted correctly. Therefore, the iPhone cannot be connected to the mobile carrier. Reinsert the SIM card correctly and restart your iPhone once.
If the problem persists, proceed to the next step.
5. Enable data roaming
If you are outside the home network zone, carriers may not connect to the network and you will get a serverless error. Therefore, you need to make sure that data roaming is enabled on your device.
To do this, open Setting → Cellular → Cellular data options → Switch on data roaming..

6. Reset network settings
In rare cases, your network settings may be corrupted. Therefore, you will receive a no-service error message. Therefore, resetting your network to factory defaults may help fix the problem.
To do this, open Setting → General → reset → Reset network settings..Then enter your passcode and tap Reset network settings..

Caution: Resetting network settings to default resets Wi-Fi network and passwords, cellular settings, VPN, and APN settings.
7. Make sure the date and time are set correctly
The iPhone’s claim to not provide service may be due to incorrect dates and times. To change the date and time Setting → General → Date and time → Turn on Automatic setting → Please select the appropriate one Time zone..
8. Update carrier settings
You may have installed the wrong carrier settings. Or you may have a bug in updating your carrier settings and you may see an out-of-service error message on your iPhone. In such cases, please check if a carrier setting update is available.
Caution: Make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network.
- Open Setting..
- Tap General → about.
You will be notified when the carrier releases an update. - Then tap update..

Then restart your iPhone and see if you get the no service error message.
9. Update iPhone
The last software update may have caused this issue. Therefore, Apple usually recommends checking for new iOS updates as it releases new updates that fix bugs. To do so
- Open Setting..
- Tap now General → Software update..
- If updates are available, tap Download and install..
10. Contact your service provider
If none of the fixes work, you may have a problem with your mobile operator. We recommend that you contact your service provider to resolve the issue.
I hope the above fix solved the problem. If you still get the out-of-service error, we recommend contacting Apple Support once. It could be a hardware problem.
