The recent Chrome OS 91 update introduced a nasty bug that prevented users from setting up Linux on their Chromebooks. Many users report that they are facing the error “Chrome OS needs to be updated” during the Linux installation, even though Chrome OS is the latest build. Research has shown that the new DLC service is the real cause, preventing Chrome OS from downloading the latest Debian Buster builds into Linux containers. So if you’re having the same issue and can’t install Linux on your Chromebook, follow the guide to fix the issue.

If you get the error “Chrome OS needs to be updated” while installing Linux on your Chromebook, don’t worry. To fix the problem, just change one Chrome flag.

1. Open Chrome browser and type: chrome://flags At the address bar, press Enter.

2. Then search for “Crostini Use DLC” Disable this Chrome flag.. Again, you need to disable this flag from the drop-down menu and do not enable it.Or you can open it chrome://flags/#crostini-use-dlc Disable the flag.

3. In the lower right corner, “Reboot“Device. Clicking on it will restart your Chromebook immediately.”

4. Now go ahead Install linux On a Chromebook. This time, the error “Chrome OS needs to be updated” does not occur. that’s it.

Here’s how to fix a Linux installation error on your Chromebook. I’m using a stable channel on Chrome OS 91, but I still get this error. However, after disabling the DLC flag, I was able to set up the Crostini container without any problems. Therefore, it is recommended that you follow the steps above to resolve the issue.
