Folding smartphones are still a niche product, but phone makers are experimenting with new designs and technologies to get a breakthrough. While Samsung is in control of the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip series, Chinese giants Xiaomi and Oppo are not far behind. And now, if the rumors are believed, Google is also working on a foldable Pixel device. A recent report further adds that the Mountain View giant plans to launch a foldable Pixel later this year.

The latest report is Elek Samsung Display, Samsung’s display development division, said it was ordered to provide Ultra-thin glass (UTG) panel (Located on Galaxy Z Fold 2) For protection of foldable OLED displays by several major companies. These include companies such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Google.

Now, for those who don’t know, Samsung Display is a leading manufacturer of display panels on the market. Most of the major phone makers buy Samsung display panels for smartphones and foldable devices. In fact, Samsung was the first company to use UTG panels for foldable smartphones.

Therefore, according to the report, Google is one of the few companies to order Samsung for UTG panels and OLED foldable displays. The software giant reportedly ordered a 7.6-inch foldable panel for the next foldable device called Google Pixel Fold. However, the size of the cover (outer) display is unknown at this time.

It’s worth mentioning that Google hasn’t officially revealed anything about the foldable Pixel device. In 2019, the company said it “I’m not in a hurry to bring a foldable product to market.” But now that the foldable smartphone market is booming, it may be a good time for Google to release the foldable Pixel.

In addition, Google is a company that develops software (Android) that runs on all foldable devices released on the market. Therefore, if a company manufactures its own foldable device, the integration of software and hardware can be fairly solid.

Moreover, as the market for foldable devices continues to expand, more companies are on the move. We’ve already seen Xiaomi announce the Mi Mix Fold in early 2021. Therefore, it is likely that Google is also aiming to launch its first foldable smartphone in the fourth quarter of 2021. Are you looking forward to it?
